My Flag

Real Flag

In 1962 the country Jamaica gained independence from the British, they soon after created a flag that is the same as it is today. The flag has two yellow lines that cross through the flag diagonally, two black triangles on the top and the bottom, and two green triangles on the left and right sides. The two yellow lines represent the golden sunshine and the island's natural resources. The two green triangles represent hope, vegetation, and agriculture. The two black triangles represent hardships overcome and to be faced. A phrase that sums up the flag “Hardships there are, but the land is green and the sun shineth.” The flag does not have a symbol in the middle like many other countries, the flag was first going to look a lot like the country Tanzania.

Economy

Jamaica does not have the best economy, relying on tourism, mining, and manufacturing. Jamaica’s income and employment come from foreign visitors and tourists. Jamaica’s neighbors Haiti and Cuba have a close GDP per capita to Jamaica, with Jamaica having almost triple the GDP per capita of Haiti and Cuba having $100 more GDP per capita. The people who live in Jamaica have different ways to deal with their low GDP per capita; they buy less expensive things and sell more things. Even though Jamaica has a pretty good GDP per capita compared to other countries in the Caribbean islands, Jamaica still does not have a great GDP per capita compared to countries outside the Carrebeans. Jamaica’s poverty rate is good compared to that of its neighbor Haiti, with Jamaica having only 12.3%. Jamaica’s economy has also been improving bit by bit, with its inflation rate going down. In 2022, they had a 10.35% inflation rate; now, in 2024, they have a 4.9%. The country's economy is also decreasing, with the GDP growth rate slowly going down through the years. Some major imports of Jamaica include 40.6% from the United States, 8.0% from China, and 4.8% from Brazil. Jamaica’s major exports are 40.9% to the United States, 8.2% to Puerto Rico, and 6.9% to Russia. Jamaica has had many ups and downs throughout the year, Jamaica has a pretty average economy compared to other countries in the world. Which affects and shifts citizens' daily lives in Jamaica.
